Congratulations—your braces are off, and your smile is finally just the way you wanted! But to keep it that way, your retainer plays a crucial role. Retainers help stabilize your teeth while the surrounding gums, bone, and muscles adjust to their new positions. Without one, your teeth can shift back—undoing all that hard work.

Types of Retainers

Removable Retainers

  • Traditional (Hawley): Metal wire across the front teeth with a custom acrylic base that fits in the roof of your mouth.
  • Clear (Essix): A slim, transparent tray similar to a clear aligner—great for aesthetics and easy wear.

Fixed Retainers

  • Bonded wires are attached to the back of your front teeth (top, bottom, or both). These are a set-it-and-forget-it option, but they do require a bit more attention when flossing.
Which One’s Right for You?

We’ll help you decide at the end of your treatment. Some patients benefit from fixed retainers, others from removable ones—or even a combination of both.

Retainer Care Tips
  • Always store removable retainers in their case—never wrap them in napkins or leave them out.
  • Clean your retainer daily with a toothbrush and cool water (no hot water!).
  • For fixed retainers, use floss threaders or a water flosser to keep the area clean.
